Workshop Descriptions

Maximizing opportunities to get federal stimulus funds. Billions of federal stimulus dollars have come to California and only a small percentage has been spent. Opportunities abound for unions to take advantage of these funds to keep and create jobs for our members. Come hear from experts on how best to take advantage of the federal stimulus programs.

Training and retraining in a 21st century economy. California invests millions of dollars in job training and workforce development. Millions more were infused in California through the Federal Stimulus. Join this session for a discussion of California’s workforce investment system best practices.

Corporate tax transparency and accountability. Every year, billions of dollars of taxpayer funds go out to companies, under the guise of creating jobs. Yet, there is no way to track the jobs created. Come learn more about pending legislation to bring more transparency and accountability to corporate giveaways.

California’s ongoing budget crisis.In 2009, California’s state budget was slashed by $32.5 billion and we are facing a $20 billion deficit this year. Come hear short and longterm proposals to balance our budget and enact a middle class bill of rights.

Labor and the environment: a shared social agenda. The labor and environmental movements continue to work together to create environmentally friendly high wage jobs. This workshop will highlight successful partnerships and what can be done to improve the quality of life for California’s workers while improving the quality of our environment.

Winning elections in 2010. The time to elect a pro-worker Governor and get rid of Arnold Schwarzenegger is finally here! Pending initiatives on the November ballot threaten hard-fought worker protections and our standard of living. Come hear from experts on the political landscape and from our own union political directors about Labor’s campaign to win!
