Brave New Films, SEIU CA and California Labor Federation Premiere: "Carly No Es Mi Amiga"

“Carly No Es Mi Amiga” is part of Brave New Films’ “The Real Carly” campaign

Sacramento, CA – Dozens of members of Service Employees International Union (SEIU) California and the California Labor Federation protested at Carly Fiorina's campaign headquarters today to expose her positions on issues important to the Latino community and to declare “Carly No Es Mi Amiga.” At the rally, Brave New Films debuted a new online short by the same name, the second installment in their “The Real Carly” campaign. “Carly No Es Mi Amiga” can be viewed here.

“Carly Fiorina is trying to get Latinos to vote for her, but her positions clearly demonstrate that she does not share our values as Latinos and she does not share our values as Californians,” said Mike Garcia, president of SEIU-USWW. “She is against comprehensive immigration reform, supports Arizona’s discriminatory SB 1070 and has outsourced California jobs. We will not be fooled.”

Wearing t-shirts with embedded video display screens, a delegation of participants delivered the presentation to Fiorina’s headquarters. In addition to the rally and video debut, Brave New Films has also launched an integrated “Carly No Es Mi Amiga” online campaign which includes Facebook ads targeted at California voters and the Latino community.

“Latinos won't fall for Carly Fiorina's cynical ploy to gain their support. She's pushing more of the same failed policies that destroyed our economy and forced millions of Latinos and other workers into the unemployment line,” said Art Pulaski, executive secretary-treasurer of the California Labor Federation. “The last thing California Latinos need is Carly's anti-immigrant, job-slashing agenda.”

The video is the latest effort by Brave New Films and workers’ organizations to expose Carly’s hidden radical agenda.

“Carly Fiorina has consistently taken stances that are inconsistent with someone who would consider themselves a friend to the Latino community. Her associations with the Tea Party and Sarah Palin, combined with her endorsement of SB 1070 speak louder than her words,” said Axel Caballero, co-creator of Cuentame Central.
Thousands of Nurses and Supporters Rally to Celebrate Suffrage, Oppose Whitman

Activists dressed in early 20th century suffrage attire, and carried signs that read, "Women Vote for Women Who Vote," a reference to the fact that Meg Whitman has barely voted for most of her adult life, and is now out to buy the California governor's seat.

"She is just almost precisely the opposite of the leaders of the suffragist movement," said Rose Ann Demoro, executive director of the California Nurses Association, which sponsored the event. "We're basically here to call attention to the hypocrisy of her running and to say just because you're female, that doesn't make you a woman."

Legislature Passes Bills to Shine Light on Corporate Tax Breaks

This week, the state legislature voted to pass four landmark bills that will finally bring accountability to corporations that receive massive tax breaks. The bills -- AB 2564, AB 2666, SB 1272 and SB 1391-- introduce basic reporting requirements and performance measures to future tax breaks for major companies. Also, for the first time, the public will have the right to access information detailing exactly which corporations took taxpayer dollars, and how much they took. If that corporation promised to create jobs but instead created massive layoffs and outsourcing, the state will be able to recoup some of that taxpayer money.

"We cannot in good conscience allow our children to attend crumbling schools while at the same time blindly giving money away to corporations that aren't helping our state's economy grow," said California Labor Federation Executive-Secretary Art Pulaski in an op-ed for the Sacramento Bee. "It's time to shine a bright light on corporate tax expenditures that have so long thrived in the shadows of our budget."

	Whitman-Samueli Fundraiser Raises Questions

Meg Whitman's big-ticket fundraiser with embroiled ex-CEO of Broadcom, Henry Samueli, raised some serious eyebrows this week, because Whitman and Samueli have more in common than being billionaire CEOs -- both were corporate insiders whose companies were involved in questionable insider deals that made millions for executives at the expense of shareholders.

Under Samueli's leadership, Broadcom was involved in the nation's largest stock backdating scandal after it failed to disclose to investors that the company had reset the dates of company stock grants to executives in order to artificially boost profits. Broadcom's backdating scheme resulted in an SEC investigation, Samueli's ouster, and a $160.5 million settlement with investors.

	Samueli Fundraiser Raises Questions:

Why is Whitman Conspiring to Raise Campaign Cash With Embattled Broadcom Tycoon?

Sacramento – An exclusive, posh fundraiser hosted tonight by billionaire Henry Samueli raises serious questions about why Meg Whitman would draw herself further into the web of corporate greed and corruption epitomized by Broadcom, the company Samueli led until he was forced out amidst the nation’s largest stock backdating scandal.

“Meg Whitman’s decision to hold a high-dollar fundraiser with another billionaire CEO whose questionable practices have drawn the attention of federal investigators is both troubling and illuminating,” said Art Pulaski, executive secretary-treasurer of the California Labor Federation. “It’s clear that Whitman is growing bolder in her shameless attempt to buy this election. The fact that she would consort with controversial corporate figures like Samueli to fatten her already bloated war chest shows a serious lapse in judgment.”

Billionaire CEO Whitman will spend Monday evening collecting giant checks from corporate insiders at Samueli’s Corona Del Mar mansion in an event that was not made public.

“With millions of Californians out of work and struggling to hold onto their jobs in the aftermath of Wall Street’s economic meltdown, it certainly doesn’t sit well that Whitman’s spending her time raking in fat checks with corporate insiders at a beachside mansion,” Pulaski added.

A look under the surface shows Whitman and Samueli have more in common than being billionaire CEOs. Both were corporate insiders whose companies were involved in questionable insider deals that made millions for executives at the expense of shareholders. Both Whitman and Samueli’s companies have been targets of federal investigations into the very same kind of shady Wall Street dealings that drove the economy into meltdown.

Samueli’s Broadcom was involved in the nation’s largest stock backdating scandal after it failed to disclose to investors that the company had reset the dates of company stock grants to executives in order to artificially boost profits. Broadcom’s backdating scheme resulted an SEC investigation and Samueli’s ouster, and Broadcom eventually paid $160.5 million in investor settlements. Samueli has pleaded guilty to lying to federal investigators, but in an unusual move, a judge threw out the guilty plea. Samueli returned to Broadcom earlier this year as chief technology officer.

Back in 2001, Whitman was a Goldman Sachs board member who was directly involved in the decisions about executive bonuses and mortgage-backed securities that are now cited as major causes of the economic meltdown and the ensuing jobs crisis. Whitman pocketed almost $ 2 million by “spinning” sweetheart stock deals she scored as a reward for bringing Goldman lucrative investment banking contracts, a practice that soon became illegal.

Whitman resigned from the board after a Congressional probe into spinning, but Goldman is still dealing with the aftermath of SEC investigations into the company’s shady dealings, and recently coughed up more than $500 million to satisfy the charges.

“The last thing California’s working families need is more of the same corporate greed and corruption that destroyed our economy,” Pulaski continued. “Cozying up to corporate insiders in order to get elected shows that Whitman remains tone-deaf to the growing concerns voters have about her Wall Street ties and agenda.”

"The evidence and theory that Whitman uses to diagnose California's problems are unscientific and an unsound basis for policy," the economists wrote in an open letter to California voters. "As a result, her diagnosis and her proposed economic policies are both deeply flawed. If implemented, her policy proposals will deepen California's budget crisis and are likely to reduce employment and economic growth."

Car Wash Owners Get Jail Time for Violating Workers' Rights

This major legal victory is in large part due to the carwash workers and allies with the CLEAN carwash campaign, who reported the numerous labor violations that led to the criminal complaint and subsequent conviction.

"The Pirian brothers were held accountable because workers at the Pirian carwashes collectively stood up for their rights and for better conditions on the job. Their efforts to organize for a voice are finally bringing accountability to the carwash industry," said CLEAN carwash campaign director Henry Huerta. "Carwash owners should take notice that workers can-and will-continue to expose illegal workplace conditions in their fight for a voice at work."

After Long Battle, Unemployment Extension Bill Becomes Law

Last night, President Obama signed into law the essential unemployment insurance extension bill to provide much-needed jobless aid for people out of work for longer than six months, including more than 400,000 jobless Californians whose unemployment assistance ran out in May. The Senate GOP had effectively blocked the bill for six weeks, but finally on Tuesday the blockade was broken when Maine Republican Senators Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe stood up for jobless workers and voted to end the filibuster.

The bill quickly passed through the Senate and House, and President Obama wasted no time in signing it into law. "Americans who are working day and night to get back on their feet and support their families in these tough economic times deserve more than obstruction and partisan game-playing that happens too often here in Washington," Obama said before signing the bill.

Take Action to Stop Union Busters at the University of California

Despite being strapped for cash, the University of California is spending much-needed public education dollars on a notorious union-busting law firm, Littler Mendelson. According to the University's own figures, over the past several years UC paid Littler Mendelson nearly $3.5 million and its attorneys upwards of $500 per hour to represent UC in its labor relations.

Working people across California need to send a clear message to decision makers at our beloved public university that we will not tolerate UC spending taxpayer dollars intended for education to fund Littler Mendelson's attack on public employees and their unions. Take action today and send a letter to UC President Yudof and the UC Regents, urging them to terminate their contract with Littler Mendelson.

Join the Fiesta to Support the Castlewood Workers Hardship Fund

On February 25th, Castlewood Country Club -- a posh Pleasanton golf course -- locked out its 61 cooks, servers, dishwashers, bartenders and janitors, and five months later, the workers are still fighting to return to work with a fair contract and affordable health care for their families. These workers and members of UNITE HERE 2850 are committed to staying in the struggle for as long as it takes - but they need help to buy food, pay rent and support their families while they are out of work.

Support the Castlewood Workers' Hardship Fund by attending a fun-filled Mexican fiesta on August 14th. The event will feature gourmet Mexican food prepared and served by the staff of Castlewood's elegant restaurants, plus margaritas, sangria, music, a raffle and more. Tickets range from $30-$50, and sponsorship opportunities are available.

Workers Call on Big Oil to Do Their Part To Rebuild California's Economy

Yesterday, hundreds of workers rallied in LA to take a stand against Big Oil companies that use our dysfunctional budget process to their advantage and get away with pay zero taxes on the petroleum they extract from our state.

The action is part of the larger "Rebuild America" campaign to take back the state budget process from the corporations that keep squeezing benefits and freebies from taxpayers - even while school children, seniors, and hard-working families suffer cuts year after year.

New Report Details Negative Consequences of Tax Breaks

This week, the nonpartisan California Budget Project released a new brief entitled "No Free Lunch: Tax Cuts Widen Budget Gaps," which outlines the negative impact that tax cuts for the wealthy -- like the ones Meg Whitman is proposing - would have on the California economy. The CBP brief clearly explains how claims that tax cuts fuel economic growth are tenuous at best, and those cuts can do even worse damage to the economy by reducing state spending.

According to the report, "States, unlike the federal government, must balance their budgets on an annual basis…. As a result, lower General Fund revenue collections due to tax cuts mean that the state has less money to spend and would have to reduce spending on public programs and services or, alternatively, raise taxes paid by other taxpayers in order to boost revenue collections."
Throughout her career as a corporate executive, Meg Whitman has made a game of downsizing workers and outsourcing their jobs, and getting exceedingly rich in the process.

This week, the California Labor Federation launched a new online video and video game that highlights Meg "Wall Street" Whitman's job-killing track record, as part of our ongoing campaign to combat Whitman's barrage of misleading and untrue advertisements and expose her Wall Street agenda.

Take A Stand Against Arizona's Racial Profiling Law

On Thursday, July 29th, join more than 500 workers as they travel from LA to Phoenix without "papers" or identification to protest SB 1070, Arizona's new immigration law, which will go into effect on that day.

"No one will be able to tell from looking at us who is illegal and who is not," says letter carrier Matt Kozlo, who will ride the bus to Phoenix. "Whether we are white, black, Asian, or Hispanic, we all came here at some point from somewhere else. Our immigration system does need to be fixed, but not the way Arizona is doing it."

Thirteen chartered buses will depart from Dodgers Stadium at 5am on July 29th, following an early-morning send-off rally, which will begin at 4am, and all are welcome to join.

Judge Rules Against Governor's Minimum Wage Order

Today, a Sacramento Superior Court judge ruled against Governor Schwarzenegger's efforts to force state Controller John Chiang to immediately start paying state workers the federal minimum wage of $7.25/hour.

Today's victory comes on the heels of another court ruling against Schwarzenegger's furlough policy. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals issued an opinion this week not only invalidating the furlough of workers at the State Compensation Insurance Fund, but upholding a lower court's ruling that the workers are owed back pay.
California Labor Federation Launches Online Video and Game to Highlight Whitman’s Job-Slashing Corporate History

New Video, Game at www.WallStreetWhitman.com Illustrate Whitman's Pattern of Mass Job Destruction

San Diego -- The California Labor Federation today released a new web video and online video game illustrating the pattern of economic destruction Meg Whitman has left behind as she got rich the Wall Street way over the last 20 years.

“Meg Whitman has made a game of downsizing workers and outsourcing their jobs, and walking away with a very real fortune for herself in the process,” said Art Pulaski, executive secretary-treasurer of the California Labor Federation. “The record shows that Whitman is a one-person weapon of mass job destruction. By attempting to buy the California governor’s office, Whitman wants to take her game to the next level, but we can’t forget there are real lives at stake with every jobs she cuts, outsources or downsizes.”

The Labor Federation video – “California’s Future Isn’t a Game” -- was released online today on YouTube and on www.WallsStreetWhitman.com after its premiere at the California Labor Federation's Biennial Convention in San Diego. The video shows how Meg Whitman advanced her career at companies like Stride Rite, Hasbro, FTD, eBay and Goldman Sachs by firing workers, outsourcing their jobs, and profiting from now-illegal insider deals. The accompanying video game on www.WallsStreetWhitman.com enables Californians to learn more about Whitman's record and encourages them to share the information on her job slashing, anti-worker agenda using online tools.

"Our video takes a humorous approach to document Whitman's record of downsizing and outsourcing jobs, but let's be clear: her Wall Street Agenda for California is no joke," Pulaski said. "Under a Whitman governorship, schools, public safety and programs for the elderly and people with disabilities would suffer to pay for Meg’s tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires.”

Whitman’s proposals for California – like cutting 40,000 state jobs, opposing job-creating projects like high-speed rail and scaling back workers’ overtime pay and meal breaks -- show she plans to use the Governor’s office to further her Wall Street agenda at the expense of workers and their families.

Whitman’s pattern of mass job destruction is clear:

While Whitman served as an executive at Stride Rite from 1992-1995, the company closed two manufacturing plants in Massachusetts and fired 450 workers -- and Whitman collected $568,000 in compensation and stock options. The Wall Street Journal reported that during and prior to Whitman’s tenure, the company closed 15 US plants, moving manufacturing to “low-cost Asian countries.”

While Whitman served as president and CEO of Florist Transworld Delivery (FTD) from 1995-1997, the company eliminated 475 jobs and gutted retirement benefits for workers -- and Whitman collected $1.2 million in compensation and stock options.

While Whitman served as an executive at Hasbro from 1997-1998, the company cut the workforce by 23 percent, laid off 500 U.S. workers and sent manufacturing jobs to Mexico.

While Whitman was CEO of eBay (1998-2007), the number of overseas workers at the company increased by 666 percent. By 2007, nearly 40 percent of eBay’s jobs were outsourced. By 2008, the company had laid off more than 10 percent of its workforce. Under Whitman, eBay repeatedly lobbied for increasing H-1B visas for foreign workers, who are often paid less and have fewer rights than workers hired in America. Whitman received about $500 million in compensation and stock options from eBay and charged the company and its shareholders nearly $3.2 million for the use of a company jet.

While serving on the board of directors at Goldman Sachs (2001-2002), where she was on the executive compensation committee, Whitman doled out $79 million in executive bonuses and received more than a half a million dollars in compensation, along with insider access to new hot stocks worth millions, a practice called “spinning,” which is now illegal.

The video and online game are part of the Labor Federation's “Wall Street Whitman” campaign to inform voters and mobilize union members, volunteers, and others to spread the word about Whitman's Wall Street Agenda.

Whitman Shows True Colors on Job Creation

Opposes High-Speed Rail and Hundreds of Thousands of New California Jobs

Oakland, CA– Billionaire CEO Meg Whitman’s campaign declared yesterday that Whitman opposes the voter-approved plan to build the nation’s first high-speed rail system in California, a project supported by a broad coalition of business, labor and environmental groups.

California Labor Federation Executive Secretary-Treasurer Art Pulaski released the following statement today in response to Whitman’s opposition to California high-speed rail:

“Meg Whitman’s opposition to high-speed rail and the hundreds of thousands of jobs it would create shows how dangerously out of touch she is with the economic realities facing so many California families.

“In her glossy TV ads, Whitman says she understands the daily hardships facing our state’s unemployed, but it’s clear that’s just more campaign rhetoric. In opposing high-speed rail, she’s shown her true colors on jobs.

“California’s high-speed rail project is precisely the kind of spark our state’s economy needs. Not only would it create good-paying jobs up and down the state, it has the potential to bring manufacturing back to California.

“It’s shocking that a candidate for Governor could be so detached from the economic hardships facing our state’s families. With one in eight Californians out of work, how can we afford not to invest in the creation of hundreds of thousands of permanent, good new jobs?”

	Background

High-speed rail is a no-brainer for California: business, labor, local governments and environmentalists all support the construction of high-speed rail in California for its economic, environmental, business and revenue benefits.

The construction and operation of a high-speed rail system is projected to create 160,000 construction jpbs and as many as 450,000 permanent jobs statewide, including in the economically depressed Central Valley.

High-speed rail will make California businesses more competitive, by speeding the movement of goods and people throughout the state, enabling businesses to attract workers, and propelling California tourism.

Voters have already declared their support for high-speed rail, approving Proposition 1A in 2008 for $9.95 billion in bonds to build high speed rail in California, more than any other state has committed to high-speed rail, and the federal government has already committed more than $2 billion.

Whitman's Opposition to High-Speed Rail Shows True Colors on Jobs

Billionaire CEO Meg Whitman continued her hypocrisy on jobs yesterday, coming out in opposition to high-speed rail and the hundreds of thousands of jobs it would create. According to her spokesperson, Whitman opposes the project because the state can't "afford" high-speed rail.

California voters approved the high-speed rail project for its economic, environmental, business and revenue benefits, and the federal government has already contributed more than $2 billion to the project. The construction and operation of a high-speed rail system is projected to create 160,000 construction jobs and as many as 450,000 permanent jobs statewide.

"Meg Whitman's opposition to high-speed rail and the hundreds of thousands of jobs it would create shows how dangerously out of touch she is with the economic realities facing so many California families," said California Labor Federation's Art Pulaski. "California's high-speed rail project is precisely the kind of spark our state's economy needs. Controller Chiang Fights Governor's Order to Slash Pay for State Workers

State Controller John Chiang is refusing to comply with Governor Schwarzenegger's order to start paying all state employees the federal minimum wage of $7.25/hour - 75 cents less than California's minimum wage, and certainly not enough to live on. This week, the Governor filed suit to force Controller Chiang to cut wages, and Chiang filed a cross-complaint to block Schwarzenegger's minimum wage order.

"Reducing state salaries to the federal minimum wage will do nothing to solve the budget deficit." Chiang wrote in an op-ed in the Sacramento Bee. "But it will cost California billions of dollars in penalties and damages for violating the federal Fair Labor Standards Act and the California Constitution."

Join a Rally Next Week to Say NO to Meg Whitman

Thursday: Nurses Protest in Redwood City

Meg Whitman has declared war on California nurses. Her attacks began with an imperious letter demanding the names and personal information of all members of the California Nurses Association. The union declined, citing member privacy, but offered to sponsor a public forum in which both Whitman and Jerry Brown could directly address CNA members. Brown accepted the invitation. Whitman refused, and instead mounted an all-out assault on the nurses - calling them at home, sending them deceptive mailers and putting up smear websites.

But California nurses won't be pushed around. Join the nurses for a rally in Meg Whitman's hometown on Thursday, July 15th. Meet at 11am at 4200 Farm Hill Blvd in Redwood City to catch the shuttle to the rally location.

Friday: State Workers Protest in Stockton

Meg Whitman has made no effort to mask her attacks on state workers. Despite the fact that public employees have already suffered furloughs, layoffs and draconian cuts under Schwarzenegger, Whitman is still vowing to lay off 40,000 more state workers, and gut pensions for those lucky enough to keep their jobs.

On Friday, June 16th, join state workers in Stockton for a noon rally to oppose Meg Whitman's corporate agenda and her attacks on state workers. The rally will take place at Weber Park in Stockton (corner of Fremont and El Dorado Sts.)

Governor Holds State Workers' Wages Hostage in Budget Process

This week, the deadline passed for the state legislature to pass a budget, and Governor Schwarzenegger took the opportunity to continue his campaign of destruction against state workers. He has once again ordered that wages for state workers be slashed down to the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour - 75 cents less than California's minimum wage.

This proposal will cause untold hardship to hundreds of thousands of families who have already have been impacted furloughs and cuts, and threatens our fragile economic recovery. State Controller John Chiang continues to challenge the Governor's order, but California state workers and their families are bracing for the worst.

State Workers Protest Governor's Draconian Cuts

The message of the rally was "I Am California", and the workers called on Governor Schwarzenegger to approve a fair contract and stop attacking state workers' wages and benefits as part of budget negotiations.

"We provide important, vital state services to Californians on a daily basis without any fanfare or attention," Local 1000 President Yvonne Walker said at the rally. "Today we are getting out the word that we are your neighbors, we are active participants in your communities, and we are California."

The workers have been organizing with the ILWU for years, and have met with management more than 100 times in an attempt to peacefully reach a first contract but the management has failed to bargain in good faith.

"Over 100 bargaining sessions and two years of talks is way too long for workers to wait for justice, ILWU Vice President Ray Familathe said at the rally. "Rite Aid management needs to get serious about reaching an agreement that will give employees the good jobs that our communities need."

California Members of Congress Introduce Workplace Safety Bill

This week, California Representatives George Miller and Lynn Woolsey, along with Rep. Nick Rahall of West Virginia, introduced a new health and safety bill that would strengthen oversight and enforcement at the nation's mines and other dangerous workplaces, provide for tougher penalties for employers who flagrantly violate the law and enhance the rights of workers who report job hazards and injuries.

"Too many employers in this country - including Massey Energy and BP-- have put profits and production ahead of worker safety and other protections. The result is the worst mining disaster and worst environmental disaster in decades and many other workplace tragedies that have claimed dozens and dozens of workers' lives," said AFL-CIO President Rich Trumka. "This legislation will save workers lives. We call on the House and the Senate to stand with the nation's miners and workers and move immediately to enact this legislation to prevent more unnecessary workplace tragedies and deaths."

Whitman Targets Nurses, Rejects Request for Open Forum

CNA refused to give up its members’ private info, and instead invited Whitman to talk to the nurses face-to-face. When Whitman declined to appear at a forum with her opponent Jerry Brown, the nurses offered a solo forum for her, moderated by non-partisan journalists, but she again declined, and instead proceeded with her onslaught of campaign propaganda on them.

"She's calling us at our homes with push polls, putting out false information to the media, posting deceitful Web sites, and we expect mail to arrive from her soon,” said CNA co-president Geri Jenkins, RN. “THIS is why we didn't want to give Whitman our personal information, but we feel like she went ahead and violated our privacy anyway."

Workers Protest Blakeslee and Whitman at Silicon Valley Fundraiser

Last night, Meg “Wall Street” Whitman joined “Oil Man” Sam Blakeslee at a ritzy fundraiser in Los Gatos. But when Whitman arrived, she was greeted by a throng of protesters who came out to take a stand against Whitman, a former Goldman Sachs exec, teaming up with Blakeslee, a former Exxon exec, to attempt a hostile corporate takeover of our state.

The economic philosophy Whitman and Blakeslee share is simple: If it's good for Wall Street and Big Oil, it's good for everyone. But we've learned the hard way just how flawed that philosophy is. The consequences of Oil Man Sam's "drill baby drill" philosophy can be summed up in one look at the disaster on the Gulf Coast. And the Wall Street agenda Meg Whitman wants to bring to California is responsible for millions of lost jobs and home foreclosures.

Jerry Brown Releases Ground-Breaking Green Jobs Plan

This week, labor-endorsed gubernatorial candidate Jerry Brown released his detailed clean energy jobs plan, which will create half a million new green jobs while also reducing carbon emissions and lessening our dependence on fossil fuels. Brown’s plan sets a goal of 20,000 megawatts in renewable energy, as well as key investments in innovative efficiency technology, by 2020.

"Investments in clean energy produce two to three times as many jobs per dollar as gas, oil or coal. And dollars invested in clean energy tend to stay in California, instead of going to other states or other countries," Brown said. "Clean energy jobs and businesses have grown much faster than the economy as a whole in the past fifteen years, and have continued to grow even during the economic downturn."

June Primary Sets in Motion a Battle for the Soul of California

With two failed corporate CEOs claiming the Republican nominations for Governor and U.S. Senate, this November’s crucial election is shaping up to be a showdown between ‘Wall Street’ candidates Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina and ‘Main Street’ candidates Jerry Brown and Barbara Boxer, with the winners having an opportunity to shape California’s future for decades to come.

The contrast between the candidates couldn't be starker. Whitman and Fiorina boast long track records of firing thousands of their workers while taking exorbitant salaries, bonuses and stock options, not to mention that they have zero experience in government or public policy. On the other hand, Jerry Brown and Barbara Boxer have decades of invaluable lawmaking experience, have never wavered in their steadfast commitment to the needs of California's working families, and will continue to fight for good jobs, workers rights and an economy that works for all.

The grant targets autoworkers as well as other workers at supply-chain companies affected by the shutdown.

"The $19 million will help supplement the federal monies that are already there to retrain people to prepare for new jobs," said California Labor Federation’s Art Pulaski. "That's pertinent in light of the fact that Tesla has a new relationship with Toyota and will open a new car-manufacturing facility there to produce electric vehicles. It's a new kind of car manufacturing, heavy on batteries. Even though they're a highly renowned workforce, these folks can use additional training to prepare for this new technology."

Rally in San Francisco for Fair Trade Policies

On Monday, June 14th, trade ministers from the U.S. and seven other countries that make up the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) will be meeting in San Francisco to negotiate the largest trade pact since NAFTA. The TPP is a unique opportunity to remake American trade policy with a high standard that puts workers and communities around the world first, not multinational corporations. But if handled incorrectly, the TPP could wind up sending thousands more of good American jobs overseas.

We need to ensure President Obama and his negotiation team develop a modern trade philosophy that raises standards of living around the world and doesn't perpetuate the corporate-driven race to the bottom of the NAFTA-WTO "free trade" model. Join the march and rally to say “New Deal or No Deal” to the TPP on Monday, June 14th at 10am at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church – 756 Mission St in San Francisco.

June 2010 Primary Sets in Motion a Battle for the Soul of California

Statement by California Labor Federation Executive Secretary-Treasurer Art Pulaski

“The results of tonight’s primaries set in motion a battle for the soul of California. It’s Main Street vs. Wall Street, with the winner having an opportunity to shape California’s future for decades to come.

“After months of obscene campaign spending, billionaire CEO Meg Whitman will use her seemingly unlimited fortune to try to stage a hostile takeover of our state. She’s made clear that, if elected, she plans to bring a Wall Street agenda to California. What that means for working families is more massive tax giveaways for corporations and the wealthy, and wholesale cuts to education, public safety and programs that our state’s most vulnerable rely upon. Whitman’s economic philosophy, which she honed as a corporate executive and director in places like Goldman Sachs, is simple: What’s good for Wall Street and the wealthy is good for everyone. California families know all too well just how flawed that philosophy is.

“The contrast between the candidates couldn’t be starker. Jerry Brown shares the Main Street values that built this state’s economy into a global powerhouse and expanded our middle class. Brown has a spent a lifetime fighting for working families. He presided over the creation of nearly 2 million jobs as Governor. He fought the exploitation of workers by large corporations as Attorney General. His experience, values and leadership are exactly what this state needs to get back on track.

“It’s equally critical that Sen. Barbara Boxer is sent back to Washington to continue to fight for working families on key issues like financial reform, health care and workers’ freedom to join unions. Boxer is a champion for working families. Californians can’t afford to have a Senator like failed CEO Carly Fiorina, who joins Whitman on the “Wall Street Express” ticket.

“With record unemployment, a huge budget gap and a rapidly shrinking middle class, the challenges California faces in the next four years are epic in proportion. Because the stakes are so high, the California labor movement intends on engaging like never before. We’ll counter Whitman’s massive spending with an unprecedented grassroots campaign to reach voters on the issues they care about: jobs, health care, retirement security and rebuilding the middle class. We’ll work harder than ever to re-elect Sen. Boxer to the US Senate and send more worker-friendly candidates to Sacramento.

“The battle for California’s future begins tonight. Workers look forward to meeting the challenges that face our state and using this election as the springboard for California’s economic rebirth.”

The California Labor Federation represents 2.1 million workers in 1,200 unions throughout the state. In April, the Federation announced the launch of a massive grassroots campaign that will expose Meg Whitman's Wall Street agenda by reaching out to millions of voters through a multi-pronged member communications program and independent expenditures, focusing heavily on person-to-person contact, including:

An army of 25,000 volunteers who will help spread the message of Whitman's dangerous agenda and Jerry Brown's record of fighting for working families.

 A member-led worksite information blitz that will reach 150,000 union workers with informational flyers in the coming weeks and hundreds of thousands more between now and the election;

 Phone calls, door knocking, union letters and mail to union voters, who make up about 1 in 5 voters statewide on Election Day;

The launch of a brand-new website, www.WallStreetWhitman.com, which will serve as one-stop shopping for families seeking information on Whitman's positions on economic issues and what her Wall Street agenda will mean for their families. The website will also serve as a hub allowing worker activists to engage others in the campaign through extensive use of email and social networking tools like Facebook and Twitter.

 Sustained public actions between now and November to ensure that everywhere Whitman goes, working people will be there to tell the truth about her Wall Street agenda for California;

 The most cutting-edge and targeted voter communication program ever used in California to ensure working families receive the information they want and need on the candidates and issues they care about;

A large, targeted independent expenditure program to reach millions of non-union voters in-person, through the mail and on the air.
