Take Action to Stop the Attacks on the U.S. Postal Service

The U.S. Senate could be voting as soon as next week on a new bill, S. 1789, which would dismantle the U.S. Postal Service as we know it. The bill seeks to eliminate Saturday mail delivery and phase out door-to-door mail service, while at the same time slashing postal workers’ retirement and gutting their collective bargaining rights.

Take action to defend the Post Office and its workers by calling Senator Feinstein at (202) 224-3841 & Senator Boxer at (202) 224-3553, and urge them to oppose S. 1789.

Help Expose the Corporate-Backed Trans-Pacific Trade Deal

Trade negotiators from throughout the Pacific Rim are gathering in southern California next week to negotiate the Trans-Pacific Free Trade Agreement. Out of the public eye, trade ministers and corporate lobbyists (over 600 of whom have certified "corporate adviser" status) are pressing for a NAFTA-style deal that encourages offshoring, expands downward corporate pressure on labor and environmental standards, raises drug prices, and bans "Make it in America," among other problems.

The only way to ensure this deal doesn't become another anti-worker “NAFTA of the Pacific” is to bring it out of the shadows. Take action to demand a “Fair Deal or No Deal” by joining an informative teach-in on Monday at 6PM at USC University Club, or by coming out to a noontime rally at the Sofitel Los Angeles on Wednesday and at UCSD on Friday (both sites of the trade negotiations).

Tell Toll Group: Treat LA Port Truck Drivers With Respect

When truck drivers at the Port of LA who are employed by Australian shipping giant Toll Group began organizing a union last fall, the company promptly fired a third of them. The workers have successfully pressured the company to rehire 15 of the 26 fired drivers, but they are still subject to harrassment and third-world working conditions, and the 11 remaining pink-slipped drivers will be out of work for good if they are not called back in the next week.

Show your support for the truck drivers who are fighting for their jobs and decent working conditions by sending a message to the executives at Toll Group today, urging them to treat their American workers as fairly as they treat their workers in Australia (where 12,000 Toll Group workers are already in unions).

California Labor Federation Urges Fair Settlement for Homeowners Devastated by Mortgage Crisis

Proposed multi-state settlement falls short, Federation leader says in letter to HUD

(Oakland) -- The California Labor Federation, representing more than 2.1 million California workers, today urged the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to hold the banks accountable for their role in fueling the housing crisis that has led to millions of foreclosures. In a letter to HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan, Labor Federation leader Art Pulaski expressed concern that the proposed multi-state settlement doesn’t go nearly far enough to providing relief for homeowners.

“Based on the terms described in numerous media reports, the deal appears to be a settlement for the banks, not a settlement for the middle class,” Pulaski said in the letter. “The people of California need real relief, not a quick settlement that lets the banks off the hook.”

California Attorney General Kamala Harris is one of several Attorneys General nationwide that has criticized the proposed settlement for not doing enough to help homeowners. The proposed settlement amount is expected to be just $25 billion, while the nation has $750 billion in negative equity. Twenty-five billion dollars would not even cover the loss of home equity to California families, let alone all homeowners across the country. The settlement is expected to help 1 million homeowners, when more than 10 million are underwater and millions more have been wrongfully foreclosed upon.

Pulaski said the settlement must include the following provisions:

Widespread principal reduction for California homeowners and fair redress for those who wrongfully lost their homes.

Reform of lending and servicing practices and penalties on those who broke the law to deter such wrongdoing in the future.

 Real enforcement to ensure compliance.

Limited liability waivers for only those issues that have been fully investigated.

Further, Pulaski called on the US Department of Justice to do a full investigation into the fraudulent practices that led to the mortgage crisis.

“It is difficult to overstate the harm that has been inflicted on our economy by the financial institutions now seeking to pay a relatively small sum and receive broad immunity,” Pulaski said. “Foreclosures destroy families financially and emotionally, and blighted, abandoned properties destroy our communities. Cities, counties, and the state are unable to meet the needs of our most vulnerable, while banks sit on record reserves. Any settlement must provide meaningful relief to homeowners and to the economy.”

Governor’s State of the State Focuses on Infrastructure Investment, New Revenues

This week, Governor Brown delivered an uplifting State of the State address, in which he underscored his commitment to investing in rebuilding California’s roads, schools and bridges, as well as constructing a state-of-the-art high-speed rail system. The Governor’s speech also focused on raising the necessary revenue to restore funding that has been slashed from schools, the social safety net and other vital services.

“The Governor’s plan to upgrade our failing infrastructure isn’t optional if we hope to rise above the recession. It’s necessary to rebuilding our economy and putting Californians back to work,” said California Labor Federation’s Art Pulaski. “And we share the Governor’s goal of raising the necessary revenue to support investing in our people and our state’s future.”
One Million Signatures Submitted to Recall Wisconsin Gov. Walker

Less than one year after Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker launched his attack on union rights, working families this week submitted a million signatures supporting a recall election of Gov. Walker, exceeding the total number of signatures required by 460,000.

Union members and allies also turned in 123 percent of the required signatures against Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald, who was thought one of the more challenging recalls to pull off. There also are enough signatures to force recall elections for the state’s lieutenant governor, and two other state senators. The Wisconsin elections board will need to verify all the signatures.
California Labor Movement Shares Governor’s Commitment to Investing in State’s Future

Statement by California Labor Federation Executive Secretary-Treasurer Art Pulaski

“Gov. Jerry Brown put forth a vision for California today that working people can embrace. With today’s speech, it’s clear that the destructive slash-and-burn politics of the previous administration have been replaced with a forward-thinking vision to invest in our future. While our state’s 21st century challenges are many, the California Labor movement is confident we have a leader at the helm to guide us beyond those challenges.

“Gov. Brown understands all too well that we can’t create jobs with stale ideas and cuts to investments that support healthy private sector growth. The Governor’s plan to upgrade our failing infrastructure isn’t optional if we hope to rise above the recession. It’s necessary to rebuilding our economy and putting Californians back to work. We simply can’t sustain a vibrant economy if we don’t invest in the infrastructure that supports it.

“We fully support the Governor’s call to begin building a high-speed rail system that will transform our state and restore our place as a world leader in innovation. We also applaud his continued efforts to green our economy, protecting the air we breathe and water we drink while creating thousands of good clean energy jobs.

“We share the Governor’s goal of raising the necessary revenue to support investing in our people and our state’s future. Budget cuts in recent years to our schools, colleges, public safety and other services have mired California in recession. Further slashing our safety net and important services that make our communities stronger and safer is a recipe for disaster. Additionally, irresponsible cuts to the retirement security of middle-class workers like teachers, firefighters and other public servants will only deepen our state’s economic slide.

“As with any grand vision, the Governor’s plan will be met with criticism by those who refuse to see California’s potential beyond the immediate challenges. But with today’s speech, the Governor made clear that now isn’t the time for weak leadership that shrinks from those challenges. It’s time for bold vision that creates jobs, strengthens communities and renews the California Dream.”

Car Wash Workers Win $1 Million Back Pay Settlement

Eight southern California car washes this week agreed to an historic $1 million settlement with the state’s attorney general for routinely failing to pay minimum wage or overtime, creating false records of work hours and not paying money owed to employees who quit. At least $800,000 of the settlement will go to workers who were underpaid, according to court records. Other parts of the settlement will pay taxes and penalties.

“Workers at these car washes were taken advantage of by unscrupulous employers who illegally denied them the pay and benefits they earned. I am pleased that the resolution of this case will allow workers to receive the pay they are owed,” said Attorney General Kamala Harris.

Wednesday: Rally to Protect Wal-Mart Warehouse Workers and Their Jobs

The workers at the warehouse also filed a complaint in federal court, detailing the 16-hour shifts they were forced to work without breaks or overtime, and the retaliation and firing they faced if they asked to receive their full wages.

Now, the workers who have led this campaign to demand that their right to the minimum wage and overtime pay be respected have been told that their employment will end at the end of next month. On Wednesday January 18, stand with the workers as they fight to save their jobs- join the rally beginning at 9:30am at Schneider Logistics (4100 Hamner in Mira Loma).

Governor’s Budget Underscores Need for New Revenues

This week, Governor Brown unveiled his 2012 budget proposal, which includes painful cuts to health care and the safety net. And the Governor warned that even deeper cuts to education, public safety and other essential services are coming unless the state new revenue.

“If we've learned anything over the past few years, it's that a cuts-only approach to the budget crisis just sinks California families deeper into economic quicksand,” said California Labor Federation’s Art Pulaski. “Investments in schools, jobs, safety and other services offer the only hope we have of moving beyond perpetual budget crises. To make those investments, we must raise the necessary revenue.”

Obama Appoints New Members to Labor Board, Consumer Agency

In defiance of the GOP’s aggressive efforts to block President Obama’s nominees for any and all government appointments, this week the White House announced the recess appointments of three new members to the National Labor Relations Board, which has had just two members since January 1st, making it unable to carry out most business. The President also appointed consumer advocate Richard Cordray to head the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, after Senate Republicans blocked his confirmation with a filibuster last month.

“We commend the President for exercising his constitutional authority to ensure that crucially important agencies protecting workers and consumers are not shut down by Republican obstructionism,” said AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka. “Working families and consumers should not pay the price for political ploys that have repeatedly undercut the enforcement of rules against Wall Street abuses and the rights of working people.”

Budget Underscores Need for Revenue to Get State Back on Track

Statement by California Labor Federation Executive Secretary-Treasurer Art Pulaski

“The governor's budget underscores the critical need for additional revenue to stave off catastrophic cuts to education and other essential services.

“If we've learned anything over the past few years, it's that a cuts-only approach to the budget crisis just sinks California families deeper into economic quicksand. We can't expect different results by taking the same approach. It's time to start investing in California again. Investments in schools, jobs, safety and other services offer the only hope we have of moving beyond perpetual budget crises. To make those investments, we must raise the necessary revenue.

“The California labor movement is committed to helping our state move forward. We look forward to working with the governor and legislature to put California back on a path to prosperity."

High-Speed Rail Peer Review Panel Misses Mark

Statement by California Labor Federation Executive Secretary-Treasurer Art Pulaski

“Today’s Peer Review Panel report on the California high-speed rail project misses the mark. With California facing a jobs crisis and an urgency to upgrade our failing transportation infrastructure, further delay in breaking ground on high-speed rail is neither prudent nor responsible.

“Any project that’s the size and scope of high-speed rail is bound to encounter difficulties along the way. But rather than working to implement the vision of high-speed rail, the panel suggests derailing the project at a critical stage, which would put billions in federal funding at risk. That’s not a viable solution for California.

“Under new leadership, the California High-Speed Rail Authority is headed in the right direction. The Authority’s business plan addresses the myriad issues facing high-speed rail in a thoughtful and thorough way. The plan offers a roadmap to realizing what is the most important and visionary public works project in decades.

“In the short term, the project will create thousands of desperately needed jobs to help lift our state out of economic morass. In the long term, high-speed rail will deliver a world-class, environmentally friendly transportation system that will transform our state. Now is not the time to back away from the high-speed rail vision. An investment in high-speed rail is an investment in our state’s future. The Legislature must grant voter-approved bonds so that work can begin on the project this year.”

Congress Votes to Extend Unemployment Insurance

After numerous attempts by House Republicans to block the extension of unemployment benefits they finally caved, and this morning, the House and Senate passed a two-month extension of unemployment insurance benefits. For millions of long-term unemployed workers across the nation, including more than 300,000 in California, this much-needed extension is the greatest holiday gift they could ask for.

“In the fight to extend aid for the jobless, the 99 percent went on the offense against 1 percent politicians. And we won,” said AFL-CIO President Rich Trumka. “People all across the country are saying our economy and our democracy are out of balance. And they’re winning the public debate.”
One of the richest hospital systems in the state, Sutter has amassed over $3.7 billion in profits since 2005, pays over $1 million to each of 20 top corporate executives, and increased their CEO Pat Fry’s salary by 20% to $4.7 million last year.

Additionally, thousands more nurses walked off the job at Long Beach Memorial Hospital and Miller Childrens Hospital Long Beach on Thursday, where management is also seeking to gut safe staffing standards, putting both nurses and patients at risk.
New Report Highlights Successful Labor-Management Partnerships

High Road labor-management training partnerships can play an important role in ensuring California’s workers have the skills they need to remain competitive in an increasingly volatile economy.

The California Labor Federation’s Workforce and Economic Development Program has just reprinted its landmark report, Working Together: Sectoral Lessons from Labor-Management Training Partnerships in California. The report profiles four unique labor-management training partnerships and examines the strengths of industry-focused and sector-based workforce development strategies. Working Together also demonstrates the benefits of investing public workforce dollars to seed sustainable initiatives, and concludes that labor-management training partnerships have special advantages over other forms of sector-based strategies.
305,000 Jobless Californians on Verge of Losing Unemployment Lifeline

More than 305,000 long-term jobless workers in California will lose their modest unemployment benefits by the end of the year, unless Congress acts immediately to extend unemployment benefits. Extending UI through next year would provide much-needed assistance to these families, while at the same time creating $70 billion in economic activity and a 0.4% increase in GDP, but Republican in Congress continue to

This week, jobless workers across the state and nation came out in force to call on Congress to stop playing politics with unemployment benefits during this already difficult holiday season. Workers marched, rallied and prayed in more than 75 cities across the US, including Sacramento, where hundreds stormed the office of Rep. Dan Lungren; San Diego, where workers joined a somber candlelight vigil; and Concord, where workers hit the streets to rally for good jobs.

Support Good Jobs- Shop Union This Holiday Season

The best way to support union families this holiday season is to patronize pro-worker stores and establishments and choose union-made goods and services. By buying union, you are not only getting quality, American-made products. You are supporting good paying jobs that help rebuild America's middle class.

Here are some easy ways to support union families this holiday season:

Shop for union-made clothing and apparel here and here and here and here.

Buy your food and entertaining needs at a union grocery store.

“Paycheck Deception” Initiative Qualifies for November Ballot

Wealthy corporate interests are once again coming after union families in an effort to silence our voice and clear the field of any opposition to their agenda. This latest attack comes in the form of a “paycheck deception” ballot initiative that corporate backers say is about special interests, but in fact is designed to strip middle class workers from having a voice in politics. The initiative qualified this week to appear on the November 2012 general election ballot.

Proponents of the initiative claim it would reign in campaign contributions by both unions and corporations, but in fact, the deceptive wording of the initiative specifically targets teachers, plumbers construction workers, nurses and other working people, while a big loophole leaves corporate campaign spending essentially unscathed and unchecked. Allowing corporations to have free reign to exert limitless influence on our political system would be destructive to all Californians.
305,000 Californians to Lose Unemployment Insurance Lifeline if Congress Fails to Act by January 1

New state-by-state numbers show the devastating impact on California’s jobless www.uistories.aflcio.org/CA

SACRAMENTO -- A new report released today by the AFL-CIO shows that more than 305,000 Californians will lose their unemployment benefits on December 31 if Congress fails to act to extend unemployment insurance.

“We elect Congress to look out for the interests of everyday people,” said Alexander Stewart, an electrician who has been out of work since July of 2010, and will lose his unemployment benefits by the end of the year if Congress fails to act. “It’s appalling that elected officials would let petty politics stand in the way of extending unemployment insurance, the only thing keeping my family and so many others afloat in these tough times.”

In California as well as across the country, jobless workers and their communities will be holding actions Thursday to call attention to the ongoing jobs crisis and to urge Congress to take immediate action to extend unemployment benefits. In Sacramento, hundreds of jobless workers will march to Rep. Dan Lungren’s office to call him to support an extension of benefits.

According to the report, young people and people of color will be disproportionately impacted if benefits are cut. In California, the unemployment rate for young people 20 to 24 years old is 19 percent. For African Americans the rate is 19.5 percent, and 14.7 percent for Latinos.

In California, the average benefit provided by the federal extension amounts to $292 a week, which covers a family’s minimum expenses for survival. That money is pumped directly back into the local economy when jobless workers pay for groceries, transportation, utilities, and housing. Budget cuts in recent years have greatly depleted the safety net in California, leaving the unemployed with even fewer options to meet basic needs if unemployment insurance isn’t extended.

“With California unemployment hovering around 12 percent, job seekers far outnumber actual jobs,” said California Labor Federation Executive Secretary-Treasurer Art Pulaski. “It’s deplorable that Republicans in Congress and their special interest friends are attempting to sever the one remaining lifeline for California’s jobless. California’s Republican members of Congress need to get their priorities in order. Our state’s jobless need an extension of benefits far more than the richest 1 percent needs yet another fat tax break.”

The prospect of losing benefits during the holiday season takes a tremendous toll on those suffering the hardship of unemployment.

“Losing a job through no fault of your own is one of the hardest things anyone can go through,” said Sherry Davis, who has been unemployed since January. “I’ve spent every single day for months looking for work. It’s so difficult when the jobs just aren’t there. Not only is there the obvious major financial impact but emotional impact as well...you once felt good about yourself and your future when you got out of bed in the morning and then suddenly, it becomes difficult to even get out of bed. Now, because of politics as usual in Washington, I’m facing not only a holiday season but everyday not knowing whether I’ll be able to feed my family, pay my mortgage or keep the lights on in January. It’s devastating.”

In partnership with Occupy Napa, labor and community groups yesterday launched a three-day ‘occupation’ at Napa Valley College, focusing largely on our devastated education system as well as the eroding safety net for those that suffer from mental illness, and the brave men and women that provide for their recovery.

All are invited to come out when they can over the weekend to show support for Napa’s Occupy Movement and the 99%.

Yesterday, dozens rallied in support of employees at Calpine’s power plants in northern Caslifornia as they turned in their authorization cards to the National Labor Relations board in San Francisco and officially filed for a union election. This is a major step in the workers’ ongoing campaign to gain union representation with IBEW 1245 in the face of a hostile, union-busting employer.

“We are seeking to form our union to win a meaningful voice and a place at the table so that we have a say in the decisions impacting our safety, staffing levels, transparency regarding wages and benefits, and the well-being of our families,” said Calpine worker Mike Farmer. “As we move forward, we reaffirm our commitment to advancing the mission of Calpine – providing clean energy to our customers – while at the same time protecting the rights and security of the workers who keep the power flowing.”

Walk for Homeless Veterans with L.A. Labor

The city of LA has more homeless veterans than anywhere else in the nation. On any given day there is an estimated 7,000 homeless veterans in Los Angeles.

“Every time I see somebody sleeping on the streets or carrying their life long belongings on their back through town, it hurts me. And as a veteran, it adds insult to injury,” said Bobby Olvera Jr. of the LA County Federation of Labor. “You leave your home to get on a plane or on a ship to fight for our country, and when you come home after doing your duty, you find out you don't have a home.”

Saturday is the United Way’s annual 5K HomeWalk to end homelessness, and hundreds of union members will be participating to specifically support homeless veterans. To join the LA Labor Homeless Heroes team, meet on Saturday morning at Exposition Park, Booth 1. Check-in starts at 7am, and the walk begins at 9am. The first 400 labor walkers to check in will receive a free tee-shirt.
Ohio Voters Overwhelmingly Repeal Anti-Union Law

In a landmark victory for working families in Ohio and across the country, Ohioans voted by a margin of nearly 2-to-1 to do away with SB 5, the right-wing union-stripping bill that would eliminate collective bargaining rights for public sector workers. This victory for workers’ rights is a likely indicator of more pro-union electoral victories in 2012.

“Ohio’s working people successfully fought back against lies pushed by shadowy multi-national corporations and their anonymous front groups that attempted to scapegoat public service employees and everyone they serve by assaulting collective bargaining rights,” said AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka. “Ohioans from all backgrounds and political parties rejected the crazy notion that the 99 percent -- nurses, bridge inspectors, firefighters, and social workers -- caused the economic collapse, rather than Wall Street.”

This week, members of the California Faculty Association voted overwhelmingly to authorize a one-day strike at two CSU campuses on November 17th to express their outrage at the Chancellor’s misplaced priorities, namely his repeated decisions to increase student fees and flatten faculty salaries while at the same time giving outrageous six-figure raises to campus presidents and executives.

All are welcome to join the pickets at Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State East Bay throughout the day on Thursday, and activist Dr. Cornell West will be joining the picket line at Cal State East Bay at 4pm.
