Labor's Edge: Views from the California Labor Movement

Raley’s-Nob Hill Workers Return to the Job After Waging Historic Strike

By Danielle Tipton, California Labor Federation

Raley’s and Nob Hill workers returned to their jobs yesterday after a nine-day historic strike. Thanks to the solidarity and strength of the workers, activists and boycotting shoppers, the UFCW Local 5 and Local 8 were able to reach a tentative agreement with Raley’s-Nob Hill management preserving health care for all workers, including retirees.  This settlement now goes on to the workers for ratification.

Ron Lind, President, UFCW 5 and Jacque Loveall, President, UFCW 8:

This is an important accomplishment for our members and retirees. Because of the resolve and Solidarity exhibited by our members and allies in the Labor Movement, along with the extraordinary support of our customers, we were able to address Raley’s competitive concerns while protecting our membership in a very challenging time. We now look forward to returning to work and serving our loyal customers.

Workers at Raley’s and Nob Hill stores went on strike on Sunday, November 4th to protest unfair labor practices and proposed cuts to health care benefits. Over the past 15 months, workers at Raley’s and Nob Hill stores had been harassed, intimidated, interrogated, threatened with termination and demoted—and their health care was under attack. Raley’s bargained in bad faith for months, leaving the workers no other choice but to walk off the job and form a picket line. UFCW Local 5 and Local 8 called for a boycott of Raley’s and Nob Hill stores until the workers were given a fair contract proposal. Raley’s and UFCW went back to the bargaining table over the weekend, hammering out a proposed agreement that protects workers and keeps the stores competitive.

This is a victory for all workers. As the labor movement continues to demonstrate,if you stick together and demand your rights, they will be respected. Or as Loveall said in a victory e-mail to the workers: “solidarity works!”  These employees have enormous courage and strong principles for defending themselves. Congratulations Raley’s and Nob Hill workers, keep up the fight!
