Republicans Display ‘Political Cowardice’ By Blocking Governor’s Balanced Plan

Statement by California Labor Federation Executive Secretary-Treasurer Art Pulaski

“By forcing a budget without revenue extensions, legislative Republicans are scuttling the rare chance for a long-term solution to our perpetual budget crises.

“The Governor is giving the legislature an opportunity to deal with the budget deficit once and for all with a balanced approach that includes deep, painful cuts and an extension of existing revenues. His plan is supported by a diverse coalition of business, labor, community groups, agricultural interests and others. For months, the governor negotiated in good faith for a real solution. And for months, Republicans blocked the governor at every turn to satisfy a handful of ideologues at the fringe of their party.

“Legislators are elected to serve their constituents, not radio shock jocks or Grover Norquist. By putting their own political fortunes ahead of the good of the state, Republicans are guilty of nothing less than political cowardice.

“It’s a profound shame that as a result of Republicans blocking a fair budget, California families are left exposed by budget uncertainty that could lead to more cuts to schools, public safety and other important services down the line.

“This budget is the only current viable solution to prevent massive, immediate cuts that would crater our economy for years to come. We urge the governor to sign this budget so that we can move forward as a state and start building for a better a future.”
