Say NO to Wall Street Whitman: Upcoming Events and Protests
August 10th: Protest Meg Whitman's Attempt to Deceive Latino Voters in Bakersfield
On Tuesday, August 10th, Meg "Wall Street" Whitman will be appearing at a reception in Bakersfield (where nearly a third of the population is Latino) as part of her bogus "outreach" effort to deceive Latino voters on issues like jobs, education and immigration. Join Latino workers and supporters for a protest at Tuesday's reception beginning at 5pm at the Padre Hotel, 1702 18th St. in Bakersfield.

August 11th: Take a Stand Against Whitman and Her Anti-Union Cronies in Sacramento
On Wednesday, August 11th, Meg Whitman will be in Sacramento, raking in massive campaign contributions at a fundraiser hosted by notorious anti-union contractor Steve Ayers. Take a stand against Whitman and her anti-union cronies- join the protest on Wednesday from 4:45-6pm at the Elks Building, 921 11th St. in Sacramento.

August 26th: Celebrate Women's Suffrage and Protest Meg Whitman, Whose Voting Record Dishonors that Tradition
On Thursday, August 26th, join the California Nurses Association and other labor and community groups for a special celebration of the 90th anniversary if the 19th amendment, which legalized the right of women to vote in the US. We will also continue our protest of Meg Whitman, who has disgraced the suffragists' legacy by failing to vote for 28 years.
To join the march, meet at 3pm at the Sacramento Convention Center. The march will begin at 4pm and will conclude with a rally at the West Steps of the Capitol. Participants are encouraged to dress in historic clothing of the era or black and white attire.

Rally for Jobs in LA With AFL-CIO President Trumka
On Friday, August 13th, join AFL-CIO President Rich Trumka, the LA County Federation of Labor, the National Association of Letter Carriers, the LA/OC Building Trades Council, Move LA and other supporters for a massive rally for good jobs in LA county.
The rally will support the "30/10 Initiative", an aggressive plan to complete 30 years of public transit projects within 10 years, creating 166,000 good jobs in the LA area, while also reducing traffic and greenhouse gas emissions. Join the action on Friday, August 13th at noon at the LA City Hall South Lawn.
UC Postdocs Secure First-Ever Union Contract
This week, more than 6,500 postdoctoral researchers at the University of California, who are members of Postdoctoral Researchers Organize/UAW, reached a tentative agreement over their first-ever union contract after more than 18 difficult months of bargaining.
"This is a great tentative agreement," said UCLA biochemist and bargaining committee member Xiaoqing Cao. "We've improved compensation and our rights at UC and have helped set standards for postdocs across the country."
Special Concert to Celebrate Dolores Huerta's 80th Birthday
Next Friday, celebrate the 80th birthday of civil rights icon Dolores Huerta with a very special concert. The event, themed "Weaving Social Justice Movements Together," will feature Carlos Santana, Lila Downs, Zack de la Rocha, and Pete Escobedo in a concert style event with Dolores. Other celebrities, including Martin Sheen, Benjamin Bratt, Ed Begley Jr, Culture Clash and Danny Glover will also be in attendance.
The event will take place on Friday, August 13th at 7pm at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. Tickets are still on sale, and all proceeds will go to the Dolores Huerta Foundation.

Celebrate and Defend Social Security on its 75th Birthday
On Saturday, August 14th, join the California Alliance for Retired Americans (CARA) and the San Francisco Central Labor Council to celebrate the 75th anniversary of our country's successful social program - Social Security. The rally will also focus on defending Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid from ongoing attacks. The event will take place on August 14th from 11am to 1pm at 7th and Mission St. in San Francisco.
