Governor’s State of the State Focuses on Infrastructure Investment, New Revenues

This week, Governor Brown delivered an uplifting State of the State address, in which he underscored his commitment to investing in rebuilding California’s roads, schools and bridges, as well as constructing a state-of-the-art high-speed rail system. The Governor’s speech also focused on raising the necessary revenue to restore funding that has been slashed from schools, the social safety net and other vital services.

“The Governor’s plan to upgrade our failing infrastructure isn’t optional if we hope to rise above the recession. It’s necessary to rebuilding our economy and putting Californians back to work,” said California Labor Federation’s Art Pulaski. “And we share the Governor’s goal of raising the necessary revenue to support investing in our people and our state’s future.”

One Million Signatures Submitted to Recall Wisconsin Gov. Walker

Less than one year after Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker launched his attack on union rights, working families this week submitted a million signatures supporting a recall election of Gov. Walker, exceeding the total number of signatures required by 460,000.

Union members and allies also turned in 123 percent of the required signatures against Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald, who was thought one of the more challenging recalls to pull off. There also are enough signatures to force recall elections for the state’s lieutenant governor, and two other state senators. The Wisconsin elections board will need to verify all the signatures.
