FEBRUARY ’08 BALLOT INITIATIVES - California Labor Federation recommentations:
VOTE NO. Proposition 91 - Transportation Funding Protection Act. The goal of Proposition 91 is to prevent the state from spending gas tax revenue on other, non-transportation related programs. However, Proposition 1A, which was backed by labor and approved by voters in 2006, accomplished the same thing that Proposition 91 set out to do. Since the passage of Proposition 1A, proponents of Proposition 91 agree that this initiative is no longer necessary.
VOTE YES. Proposition 92 - California Community College Initiative. Workers who graduate from community colleges see an average wage increase of 86 percent just three years after completing their education. Proposition 92 would reduce community college attendance fees to $15 per unit, ensuring that higher education remains accessible and affordable to hundreds of thousands of students in California.
VOTE YES. Proposition 93 - Term Limits and Legislative Reform Act. Proposition 93 would impose a shorter total limit on legislative terms, while permitting legislators to serve longer in either legislative house. This initiative strikes a reasonable balance between the need to elect new people with fresh ideas, and the need for experienced legislators with the knowledge and expertise to solve the complex problems facing our state.
VOTE NO. Propositions 94, 95, 96 and 97 - Referenda on Indian Gaming Compacts. Union members know that the right to form and join a union is essential to winning improved wages, benefits and working conditions. But many casino workers on Indian reservations do not have the enforceable right to organize into a union unless it is specifically stated in the tribe’s gaming compact. The February ballot includes four gaming compacts that all fail to protect the rights of these workers. We have stood in strong opposition to these compacts ever since they were originally proposed in 2006.
